Lake Artemesia Cleanup - May 2008

For the third year in a row, Community Service Committee member Kirk Karwacki, Tradesmen International, Inc., organized a spring cleanup project in a Prince George’s County park.  The spring 2008 project was at Lake Artemesia in Berwyn Heights, MD, where 20 volunteers painted benches and spread mulch to beautify the park for its neighbors.

Bill Gordon, park manager for Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, sent the following message to Karwacki after the project:

“I wanted to pass on my appreciation to you and your volunteers for all you do for The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the patrons of our parks.  This year you came through with another great job as in [the] past.  Bob Burgner sent me a message raving about you and your group, stating it was one of the best groups he has ever worked with.  I know this year we had some changes and your staff were still able to get it done.  Please pass this on to all your volunteers.  I hope they all had some time to enjoy the Lake after their work was done.  Many Thanks!”

Volunteers came from these member companies:

Vansville Park Cleanup

On Saturday, April 21, 2007, 24 volunteers from the chapter's Community Service Committee and nine member companies took advantage of a warm spring morning to combat the effects of winter at Vansville Neighborhood Rec Center in Beltsville, Maryland. To make this neighborhood park ready for summer activities, the volunteers picked up trash; painted three picnic tables and four basketball poles and their backstops; spread stone dust under picnic tables and wood chips around a playground; and replaced a wood-beam border around the playground.

Manna Food Center - 2006

ABC of Metro Washington members donated over 1,000 pounds of food in January 2006 and more than 2,700 pounds of food in July that year.  Volunteers also sorted, packed and made boxes to help Manna prepare for distributing food to needy Montgomery County residents.

Volunteers also donated their services to convert a storage room into an office.  The space needed to have a window installed in a masonry wall, a doorway connecting the storage room to another office sealed, a new doorway installed out into the warehouse, telephone and computer wiring, HVAC service extended into the office, paint and carpet.
