Update on DC First Source Lawsuit

In May of 2012, ABC Metro Washington, along with two member contractors and four individuals, filed a Complaint (fancy name for a lawsuit) asking the US District Court for the District of Columbia to strike down as unconstitutional the District’s First Source Employment Agreement Act of 1984. In July of 2012, the District responded with a Motion to dismiss our Complaint. This led to a “battle of the briefs”, with the last brief being filed in October of 2012. We heard nothing from the District Court until March of 2013 when Judge Emmet Sullivan asked the parties to weigh-in on whether or not the Privileges and Immunities Clause of the Constitution applies to the District of Columbia.

2013 Legislative Session a Huge Success

The MD Joint Legislative Committee (JLC) worked tirelessly during the 2013 90-Day session of the Maryland General Assembly.  The Committee reviewed hundreds of bills which potentially had an impact on the construction industry, taking positions and lobbying on behalf of the ABC membership before the various Committees, as well as the House and Senate chambers.

Patrick Mara for at Large DC Council

One of the most important functions of ABC is to assist in creating a business environment that promotes the merit shop philosophy and fosters competition.  Elections of local officials provide our member companies the opportunity to affect real change.  The upcoming April 23rd election for an At-Large seat on the D.C. City Council will be no exception. The Board of Directors of ABC of Metro Washington voted unanimously to support the candidacy of Patrick Mara for the At-Large seat on the D.C. City Council.
