Hertzbach & Company, P.A.

What is the biggest misconception about the industry?
Hertzbach & Company, P.A. was founded as a certified public accounting and consulting firm serving the construction industry. Over the years, we evolved to serve many different industries. However, we have continuously noticed how competitive the construction industry is. The level of competition changes drastically based upon movements in the overall economy. Operating successfully in the industry requires a tremendous amount of talented people not only to bid contracts but to execute and derive results. The biggest challenge or biggest misconception is that these "talented" people are readily available to hire as a company enters a period of growth. The labor market for talented people in the trades has become very challenging and a shortage exists. We encourage companies to monitor their growth in a manner where they can have great talent brought up through their own ranks.

What is your biggest current challenge at work?

The biggest challenge that I have at work is mentoring the next generation to be the future leaders of our organization. Certainly, one of our goals is to transition our firm to people that have shown the management skills and the expertise to give exceptional client service and to forge ahead with our legacy. We are fortunate to have, out of our 200 employees, many who are up to that challenge and exhibit the core values and the skill set to be afforded the opportunity. This is something I take great pride in. For years, I have implemented transition plans for our clients so their companies can be passed to the next generation. It is always interesting when you now are putting similar plans together for your own organization.

What keeps you up at night?
I would say that I sleep very well. I feel that because I have been forward thinking my entire career and in my personal life, that this has minimized any potential stress and anxiety. Life is beautiful. Every day I wake up thinking what can I do to make people smile and make ordinary moments exceptional.

What project is your company most proud of?
The internal projects we are most proud of are our women's initiative - SOAR (Supporting Opportunities for Advancement and Retention) and our employee training and mentor program. SOAR, formed in 2012, was created by women in our office to increase the recruitment, retention and advancement of the firm’s top talent. In addition, the group strives to foster an environment for all employees that supports professional development and work-life balance, enabling employees to reach their peak performance. SOAR provides access to mentors, discussions with firm partners, leadership development courses and other professional growth opportunities.

Our employee training and mentor program is something we also are very proud of. On the first day of their career at Hertzbach, our new employees are assigned a mentor and they begin their training. While bonding with and learning from their mentor, they experience hands-on learning and are extensively prepared for working with our valued clients.

How does your ABC membership help your company?
We represent a tremendous amount of contractors in the construction industry and have done so for almost 70 years. Being a member of ABC helps us keep in touch with current trends in the industry and is also an opportunity to spend great times with our friends and clients at ABC.

What do you look forward to each day?

Each day I look forward to waking up and making a difference in peoples’ lives, no matter how small. When I look back at the end of the day, it's my goal to feel a sense of accomplishment.

What is your favorite metro Washington hangout/restaurant?

Black's Bar & Kitchen in Bethesda.

What do you do for fun?

What book are you currently reading?

Raving Fans by Kenneth Blanchard. I have read it many times before and will continue to reference it, as it always seems to bring me new ideas.
