What is the biggest misconception about the industry?

That the waste industry is still run by The Sopranos! In fact, it is quite the opposite. Our industry is evolving every day and has made major strides with advancements in technology in recent years.

What is your biggest current challenge at work?
One of our biggest challenges is getting owners and developers to treat Trash and Recycling like all the other utilities. These are major operational challenges and it takes time and space to design the best systems for each particular project.

What keeps you up at night?
Mostly my dog when he decides to sleep on my side of the bed! But otherwise it is knowing that we have employees who count on us to ensure there is work for them the next day.

What project is your company most proud of?
Most recently it would be The Wharf. We were involved in this project from the early days so it gives us great pleasure to see what a vibrant part of the DC community and skyline it has become. This is aided by the fact that the trash is kept mostly out of sight!

How does your ABC membership help your company?
In so many ways. Whether it be the networking or the vendor partnerships, it helps tremendously. One of the biggest aids is to our safety program and training. ABC makes it very easy.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be the GM of one of the Washington Area Sports Teams. I interned and worked for the Washington Bullets and Capitols in the late 90's but eventually decided the family business was calling.

Tell us something no one in the industry knows about you.
On really stressful days, or when I have to focus, I listen to Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. I don't know why, but it works for me!

What do you look forward to each day?
Seeing my kids. I have to come to realize that soon enough that won't be there every morning, and maybe it won't be as hectic, but it also won't be as much fun and as rewarding as it is now.

What are you like to work for?
I don't know, I have never worked for me! But I trust that since we have some employees with us for more than 30 years, and generally low turnover, that I must be doing something right.

What is your favorite metro Washington hangout/restaurant?
I don't get out like I used to, but I love going to see live music. The Anthem is a great new spot, but I also love Gypsy Sally's, 930 Club and The Hamilton.

What do you do for fun?
Anything outdoors; golf, skiing, mountain biking, hiking and I just started playing in an over 40 soccer league!

What business/career advice do you wish you had when you began?
Save your money and buy real estate!

What was your first job?
Pizza delivery boy!
