Since 2006, the Community Service Committee has worked with Pastor Bob Mathieu of DC Christian Ministries and the Anacostia Gospel Chapel to provide the ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner to families in need in southeast DC. In 2009, the committee expanded the project to include local food banks, including the Capital Area Food Bank (which serves Prince George's County and Washington, DC), Manna Food Center (which serves Montgomery County), and the Bowie Interfaith Pantry and Emergency Aid Fund (which serves Prince George's County).
Members participated by
- Collecting the non-perishable ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner, such as boxed potatoes or macaroni and cheese, bags or boxes of stuffing, canned vegetables (corn, green beans, yams, Durke onions, etc.), cream of mushroom soup, marshmallows or brown sugar, canned gravy or gravy mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling, a cake mix, tea or coffee.
- Providing Pastor Mathieu with Safeway or Giant gift cards in denominations no greater than $25 so the family could purchase the turkey and other perishable ingredients. (Giant and Safeway were the stores accessible to Pastor Mathieu's families. Donations greater than $25 were broken down into mulitple gift cards so they could help more than one family.)
Food and gift cards should be delivered
