COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community service is an integral part of our culture.

The purpose of our Community Service program is to give back to the community in which our members live and work.  Secondary benefits are the networking opportunities created when working beside other members and the positive image created for our industry.

Recognition for Excellence in Community Service

At the association's 2004 national convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, and again at the 2008 national convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, ABC National presented the Metro Washington Chapter with the Award of Excellence for Community Service. These awards recognize the chapter's superior service to the community.

The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) & The Center for Association Leadership presented the chapter with a 2008 Summit Award for its members’ participation in the 2007 DC schools “Buff and Scrub” program.  The chapter was eligible for the Summit Award after winning a 2008 Award of Excellence through ASAE’s Associations Advance America (AAA) program. Summit Award recipients were selected from a field of 38 Award of Excellence winners, which came from 150 entries overall.

Community Service Committee

Many of ABC's members want to offer their employees the opportunity to serve their community. Other members have a keen desire to participate in community service on a corporate level but they do not have the resources to dedicate to planning service projects.

ABC of Metro Washington's Community Service Committee offers a solution. The committee selects worthwhile projects, plans the resources needed, and coordinates the scheduling for projects that every member can join.

By pooling the resources of many members, ABC's community service projects can make a bigger impact in the community than one company could achieve on its own. When selecting community service projects, the committee strives to select projects that will be fun for volunteers and that will meet a real need in our community.

A construction industry alliance between ABC and the Modular Building Institute (MBI), START leverages the resources of the construction industry, nongovernmental organizations and government agencies to respond quickly and efficiently with relief and rebuilding efforts following natural disasters.  START Haiti will help the country rebuild after January’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake. START Haiti gives ABC and MBI member companies an avenue for raising funds and sending modular containers outfitted with medical supplies to Haiti.
